Connect 1: Enabling the CFT to Model Whole Farm – Early Design Thoughts |
Benjamin Kayatz – Methods Manager, Cool Farm Alliance; Consultant, Environmental Impact Assessment, Soil & More Impacts GmbH
The Cool Farm Tool determines product carbon footprints at farm level for individual crop or livestock products. However, to explore the full potential for emission reductions for agriculture, an assessment of the whole farm or at least the entire crop rotation is essential. Soil & More Impacts will present some of the work where we used CFT for an assessment of crop rotations and whole farm, as well as discuss issues we observed. We will also present a brief overview of different guidelines looking at the GHG Protocol. Various options already exist for an initial assessment of a whole farm or crop rotation and we will present early design thoughts on a more holistic full farm assessment. We will also host a discussion on your experiences, ideas, and requirements for the assessments of whole farm and crop rotations.
In this session, you will
• Explore different use cases for whole farm level assessments
• Hear early design thoughts for using the CFT for whole farm assessments
• Share your own experiences with whole farm assessments and discuss requirements and ideas |
Connect 2: Data Asset Capitalization – How Members could Benefit from CFT Data |
Speakers:
Davide Ceper – VP Open Farm & Field Data Exchange, Yara
Stephen Hearn – Founder, Kynetec
Moderator:
Graham Mullier – Chair DevOps Committee, Cool Farm Alliance; Head Content Digitisation, CP R&D IT, Syngenta
Is there really value in data? Is data really ‘the new oil?’ In a panel session chaired by Graham Mullier (CFA DevOps Committee chair) we will hear from two leading organisations making connections across the data ecosystem. Stephen Hearn (Kynetec) will describe the Cool Farm Tool as deployed across a statistically representative 100 million acres in 48 countries for benchmarking, monitoring trends, and the prioritisation of regenerative agriculture practices by zip code. Davide Ceper (Yara and ODX) will discuss the open farm and field data exchange – ODX – being set up as a neutral broker ‘clearinghouse’ to enable greater transparency in global agriculture and food supply chains. The panel will discuss trends in data asset capitalisation and explore opportunities for CFA members to gain more value from their data. |
Connect 3: Beef Module – What’s New and What’s Next |
Jon Alcock – Sustainable Development Director, Viresco Solutions
Hugh Martineau – Head of Sustainability, Map of AgThis session will ask the critical question as to whether and how the beef module should evolve to an integrated management and assessment tool with deeper analytical capabilities. Hugh and Jon will describe common findings from using the CFT with UK and Canadian beef producers to influence on-farm management changes, including critical updates that have been made to the module, its limitations, and future potential. Members will be encouraged to interact and describe their objectives and needs for the beef module. |
Connect 4: Cool Farm Tool Demo–CFT 101 |
Claire Lewis – Advisor, Cool Farm Alliance
In this session, we will model example cases for livestock and own produced feed items, and simulate possible scenarios of decision making in a live demo of the Cool Farm Tool. This shows interactive nature of the tool and the significance of regenerative agriculture practices in terms of GHG emissions reductions. |
Connect 5: Versioning Framework: How the CFT Will Deliver the Latest Science |
David McMahon – Product Manager, Cool Farm Alliance
In this session, we present the model we plan to use to deliver the next version of the Cool Farm Tool with the latest science based methods, emission factors and bug fixes. This will allow us to provide farmers and members with the most accurate calculation possible of the carbon footprint of your agricultural activities. |
Connect 6: API Tutorial ‘How To’ |
James Novakowski & Marc Shapiro – Technical Product Managers, Cool Farm Alliance
Build a foundation for building integrations with the CFT REST API. The workshop will cover accessing CFT API credentials and documentation and explore the built-in API sandbox environment. Finally, we will build a basic CFT API integration using the Python programming language and interactive Jupyter Notebooks.
In this session, you will
• Access API credentials
• View and explore the API documentation
• Prototype and test API calls using the CFT API Demo environment
• Build a demo integration with the CFT API using the Python programming language and interactive Jupyter Notebooks |
Connect 7: Outcomes vs Process Focus in Driving More Sustainable Agriculture – What is the Right Balance? |
Joe Rushton – FSA Programme Manager, SAI Platform
This Member Connect session will discuss the pros and cons of focusing on results vs process when it comes to driving more sustainable agriculture supply chains. The session will examine how to find the the right balance for different situations. |
Connect 8: Update on the New CFT Perennials Module |
Speakers:
Alexi Ernstoff, PhD – Global Science Lead, Quantis
Patrick Lawrence – Environmental Modeler/Agroecologist, Sustainable Food Lab/Repliculture
Alicia Ledo – Consultant
Vassilios Litskas – Researcher, Cyprus University of Technology
Paula Sanginés de Cárcer – Forest Engineer and Sustainability Consultant, Quantis
Moderator:
Richard Heathcote – Science Committee Chair, Cool Farm Alliance
The CFA is developing an integrated perennials pathway/module that covers both GHG emissions and sequestration for a variety of growing systems: tropical, temperate, and mediterranean crops and agroforestry, the use of shade trees, etc. This session will update you on the current progress using a case study of a tool for Cypriot viniculture, the current C-Sequ Perennials project with Quantis, and some work underway with coffee. Finally, there will be a discussion on the challenges of integrating the outcome of this work into the CFT.
In this session, you will
• Hear about preliminary work towards an integrated perennials pathway: Cypriot viniculture & coffee
• Discuss the agronomic, data and technical challenges of integrating the outcome of this work into the CFT, and how this integration might be achieved |
Connect 9: Using the CFT as Part of a Larger Program to Create Change |
Speakers:
Leslie Berger – Principal Consultant, Agricultural Value Chains, South Pole
Elizabeth Reaves – Senior Program Director, Sustainable Food Lab
Linda Romijn – Project Manager, Control Union
Moderator:
Simon Miller – Advisor, Cool Farm Alliance; Managing Partner, 3Keel
This highly interactive session will kick off with two case studies on creating change. Elizabeth Reaves of the Sustainable Food Lab will present on a project to build soil health and improve farmer resilience in the US Corn Belt through diversifying the corn and soybean crop rotation. Linda Romijn of Control Union will present on using the CFT to create two-way conversations between farmers and buyers, on mitigation potentials and ways to achieve them. Participants will then have a chance to share from their own experience with programs and projects, and ask questions in the interest of exploring together what it takes to make a positive difference.
In this session, you will
• Share stories, learn from each other, build a sense of community, generate ideas, inspiration, energy, hope and find and give support to each other for the real world work of building more resilient farming systems |
Connect 10: Monetising Carbon and GHG Reductions to Drive Scale |
Simon Haldrup – CEO, Commoditrader
Matt Schmitt – Senior Director, Commercial Carbon, Cargill
Andrew Voysey – Head of Strategy and Business Development, Soil CapitalThis session explores two agricultural carbon payment programs both based on the Cool Farm Tool. We’ll hear about them from different perspectives, including from the buyer side of one of them. Both programs are “early days” and are pioneering a new way to bring additional revenue to farmers for agricultural management practices that store more carbon in the soil and reduce GHG emissions. This is a difficult and yet urgent challenge. The presenters will share candidly the challenges and opportunities with the invitation to join in the effort. In this session, you will
